Electronic Arts is shutting down BioWare, canceling the next Mass Effect that had been in early development for years, and laying off about 400 people (roughly 50 of them from the Edmonton studio that once made Knights of the Old Republic, the original Mass Effects, and Dragon Age). This comes two months after the big Saudi-led buyout loaded the company with debt and a promise to find $700 million in savings. The memo basically said they’d “taken a hard look at the business” and decided the legendary RPG studio was not one of the things that needed to keep existing while sports games and live-service shooters get to stay.

BioWare put out the usual “these games became so much more because you played them” farewell, which is true and also the kind of sentence companies write when they’re about to delete the save file on a 30-year studio. Dragon Age: The Veilguard didn’t hit the numbers they wanted. The Mass Effect team had already been shrunk down to a small group. The Saudi money arrived, the debt arrived with it, and suddenly the studio that helped invent the modern western RPG is getting the “we’ll always have the memories” treatment while Apex Legends gets another season of battle pass skins.

Maybe the industry has spent so long treating story-heavy single-player games like a luxury tax that we’re not allowed to be shocked when a private equity situation treats them like one. BioWare’s last decade was uneven. People still loved the idea of BioWare more than a lot of the actual recent output. But canceling a Mass Effect that had been teased since 2020 and closing the studio entirely still feels like deciding the only genres that matter are the ones that can sell you a cosmetic every two weeks. This was telegraphed the moment the buyout closed and we all spent the intervening months arguing about other things. Shepard’s still out there somewhere. He’s just not getting a new ship.

**Verdict: NOPE**

This is industry news, not a product. The closure itself is the overhyped “surprise” that wasn’t one. If you were waiting on the next Mass Effect or treating BioWare as an ongoing source of single-player RPGs, the honest read is that the hype died with the buyout. The old games are still there. The future ones aren’t.
